Back when I was a young buck in Athens, Georgia, on November 30, 1993, I went to get a much needed cup of coffee before art class at UGA. The place was called Espresso Royale Cafe, right across the street from north campus. When I went to open the door, a family was coming out, and being the southern gentleman that I am, I held the door open to let them pass. The lady with the bright blonde hair was Courtney Love, carrying Frances Bean in her arms, who was a little over a year old. Then came Kurt Cobain, who said “thank you” to me. I was about a head taller than that guy, but already in awe, being a huge fan of his music. I already knew from the tiny Athens Grapevine that they were staying at Michael Stipe’s house. I would become friends with Michael a bit later on, being invited to go “Nightswimming” in his world class pool, with a huge drunken crew. He even has one of my paintings hanging in his house, God bless him. Although I never had the honor of seeing Nirvana perform live, I did hold the door open for The Cobain Family. Which kinda led me to want to do a painting in her honor. That my friends is what the Courtney Love Cookbook is all about.
